Heather Ward, Portland Doula
Growing your family truly takes a village of compassionate, knowledgable and supportive people. My passion is being a part of that village as an experienced birth and postpartum doula! In this journey, we will explore your needs, dreams, and values . There will be challenges and triumphs and from this, you will discover inner strength & knowing. When you surround yourself with people who are 100% here to support, uplift and empower you, the journey unfolds with a higher sense of joy and ease. In this journey, you will meet a new person(s), the one you birth from your body and the person you become from this life-altering experience. I view my role as your doula as your guide. I cannot walk the path for you, but I can show you the multiple paths available to you and support you every step of the way.
I have been a birth doula since 2003 and attended over 500+ births in various birthing locations/settings. As your birth doula, I am passionate about you being well informed! I offer unlimited prenatals and lots of education so you can have all your questions answered and we can get to know each other well before birthing time. During your birthing time we put this information into action. I offer suggestions, support, and, breaks for your partner(s), and your partner(s) can be involved at the level that feels best to both of you. If needed, I help you formulate questions to ask about interventions being offered and help you advocate for your wishes.
I have been a postpartum doula since 2007 and before that worked as a nanny, preschool teacher and director of an after school program, and I have an AA in Early Child Development. Included in my postpartum services, I offer information on all aspects of baby care, feeding your baby, and pumping. As your postpartum doula, I arrive with a smile on my face ready to dive into whatever you may need for the day! Maybe today you want to learn about bathing your baby, swaddling or baby wearing. Today might be the day for a long shower and nap while I watch your baby (and siblings) and fold a load of laundry or clean up the dishes. Perhaps you need some healthy snacks and meals made for the upcoming days. This might be the day you need help with a painful latch or reassurance that baby is feeding well. Most visits include a little of everything. Every visit includes lovely conversations and questions answered. My goal is to leave your home with you feeling well taken care of and feeling more confident in your own skills.
I am happily married, have two thriving adult children, and a fur baby (a senior Labrador retriever). I love spending time outside whether it’s in my backyard playing with plants and dirt, hiking in the trees or romping through rivers and in oceans. My inside hobbies include amateur sewing of quilts with batik fabrics, watercolor painting poorly, reading fantasy fiction and spiritual wellness books, and once in a while binge watching good TV.
