Heather Ward, Birth & Postpartum Doula

Heather Ward, Portland Doula

Growing your family truly takes a village of compassionate, knowledgable and supportive people. My passion is being a part of that village as an experienced birth and postpartum doula! In this journey, we will explore your needs, dreams, and values . There will be challenges and triumphs and from this, you will discover inner strength & knowing. When you surround yourself with people who are 100% here to support, uplift and empower you, the journey unfolds with a higher sense of joy and ease. In this journey, you will meet a new person(s), the one you birth from your body and the person you become from this life-altering experience. I view my role as your doula as your guide. I cannot walk the path for you, but I can show you the multiple paths available to you and support you every step of the way.

I have been a birth doula since 2003 and attended over 500+ births in various birthing locations/settings. As your birth doula, I am passionate about you being well informed! I offer unlimited prenatals and lots of education so you can have all your questions answered and we can get to know each other well before birthing time. During your birthing time we put this information into action. I offer suggestions, support, and, breaks for your partner(s), and your partner(s) can be involved at the level that feels best to both of you. If needed, I help you formulate questions to ask about interventions being offered and help you advocate for your wishes.

I have been a postpartum doula since 2007 and before that worked as a nanny, preschool teacher and director of an after school program, and I have an AA in Early Child Development. Included in my postpartum services, I offer information on all aspects of baby care, feeding your baby, and pumping. As your postpartum doula, I arrive with a smile on my face ready to dive into whatever you may need for the day! Maybe today you want to learn about bathing your baby, swaddling or baby wearing. Today might be the day for a long shower and nap while I watch your baby (and siblings) and fold a load of laundry or clean up the dishes. Perhaps you need some healthy snacks and meals made for the upcoming days. This might be the day you need help with a painful latch or reassurance that baby is feeding well. Most visits include a little of everything. Every visit includes lovely conversations and questions answered. My goal is to leave your home with you feeling well taken care of and feeling more confident in your own skills.

I am happily married, have two thriving adult children, and a fur baby (a senior Labrador retriever). I love spending time outside whether it’s in my backyard playing with plants and dirt, hiking in the trees or romping through rivers and in oceans. My inside hobbies include amateur sewing of quilts with batik fabrics, watercolor painting poorly, reading fantasy fiction and spiritual wellness books, and once in a while binge watching good TV.

Heather’s Testimonials

“If you are looking for support with your pregnancy, delivery, or postpartum, hire Heather. She is worth every penny and more. She is extremely knowledgeable, warm and steady in person, and open and supportive in her approach. I labored at home with her and she stepped right in and supported my partner and myself amazingly. During an unmedicated hospital delivery she was right there, helping remind me what to do, how things were going, communicating with me, and assisting my partner. The staff respected and appreciated her. Truly a critical and valuable presence. Afterward she was a supportive presence when making some medical decisions, and then at postpartum home visits she was SO HELPFUL with breastfeeding, watching the baby so we could nap, showing us how various things worked. Hire Heather, period. You will like working with her and getting to know her. Your birth will be better. Your life will be better.”

“We worked with Heather for the birth of my daughter (2nd child) in Dec 2022. I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of working with her and felt she helped me to create the birth I was looking for with my 2nd child. From the very first call, before we even decided to work with her, she was attentive, caring, and knowledgeable. She listened to my needs and gently made suggestions to help me achieve the goals I was looking for. I was impressed with every recommendation she suggested and it came together to create my ideal birth and pregnancy. She was wonderful to have as a part of my labor and delivery experience and helped me and my husband feel supported throughout the pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum. I would not hesitate to work with her again if we are blessed with more children.”

“After a traumatizing experience with our older son’s birth, we decided to find a doula to help make birth #2 go better. Heather was a perfect fit! She helped us communicate better with doctors and nurses in the hospital, advocate for ourselves in terms of the medical interventions we wanted and ones we didn’t, and empowered us to feel confident in our decisions. The resources and exercises she gave us throughout the pregnancy gave us confidence and clarity when it came time to give birth. As someone with a science background, I really valued that her knowledge and advice was based in science and current medical techniques. She never pressured us to do anything a certain way, instead providing us with all of the context and information to make our own decisions. In the hospital she was an excellent part of our care team, helping us to feel comfortable and reassured that we had a kind, patient, experienced birth expert with us at all times. I’m so happy with how this birth went, thanks to my awesome birth team (Heather + my husband and mom). It healed the trauma from my first birth. I would highly recommend Heather to anyone looking for a doula!”

Sarah

“We hired Heather as a postpartum doula to help us navigate our first child as we had no help at the time. Heather was absolutely wonderful, she helped us learn everything about how to handle our daughter, gave us a whole lot of confidence as first time parents and helped us navigate a tough initial few days as she had jaundice and was losing weight. It was really nice having Heather’s expertise in those times and I would totally recommend her. She also helped us out with household chores while we managed some sleep as she watched the baby. Would highly recommend her if you’re thinking of getting a postpartum doula, she also does offer services as a birth doula.”

“I can’t say enough positive things about Heather! From the very beginning of my pregnancy her support and education was invaluable. Her compassion, kindness, skill, and knowledge are unparalleled and made us feel much more confident as first time parents. Heather was amazing at providing and empowering us with information to make informed decisions not only about pregnancy but also my labor preferences. All thanks to Heather I ended up having an amazingly positive unmedicated birth experience. Her presence at the hospital gave me not only confidence but also sense of calm the entire way through. She somehow made my 24 hour labor pass by quickly. Her support after birth with breastfeeding and baby care was also invaluable. I feel so lucky and grateful to have found her and cannot recommend her enough. I love her very dearly and can’t stress enough the positive impact she has had on my first childbirth experience. I look forward to having her by my side at all future births :)”

Sara

“We are beyond satisfied, grateful, and fortunate to have had Heather by our side during our first child’s birth. She played a key role in us having an uncomplicated pregnancy and labor that allowed both a healthy mom and child. Heather provided plenty of information backed by research, technical material, tools, experience, emotional support, and physical support to me and my husband during my pregnancy, labor, postpartum, and baby care. Heather is a warm, kind, organized, and professional doula that definitely made us more prepared for this new chapter in our lives. We would highly recommend her if you want to feel more supported, empowered, informed, and calm for a smoother newborn experience.

“Heather is just an incredible person! From the very first conversation, she helped us feel at ease. With Heather’s guidance, we felt empowered to have the type of birth that we wanted to have. On the day of my baby’s birth, Heather was incredibly calming, and she constantly helped me find new positions to try and she kept me motivated. She was able to see two steps ahead and was able to anticipate what I needed, when I needed it. It was a long, long day, and looking back I’m just so amazed at the endless supply of energy that Heather has! After our baby was born, we made the excellent decision to hire Heather for her postpartum package. She helped get us through the first couple of weeks with gentle care, guidance, and food.”

“Heather was an invaluable resource, offering unwavering support, guidance, and advocacy throughout the entire process. Her dedication to helping me achieve my goal of an unmedicated birth in the hospital was truly instrumental, and I cannot recommend her highly enough. Heather’s compassionate nature and calming presence immediately put me at ease, allowing me to feel safe and supported throughout the entire journey. During labor, Heather’s expertise truly shone through. She was by my side, offering encouragement and comfort during each contraction, reminding me of my strength and the purpose behind my decision for an unmedicated birth. Heather’s unwavering belief in my ability to birth my baby naturally became a powerful motivation, and I am convinced that without her, my experience would not have been the same. Thank you, Heather, for your incredible support and for being an integral part of my birthing experience. I am eternally grateful for your presence and wish you all the best on your new adventure.”

Natalie

“I was skeptical of whether we would need a doula, but my wife wanted one. We interviewed a few and decided to hire Heather. I can readily admit I was wrong – having a doula was the right decision for us, and I can’t imagine a better one than Heather.”
