Heidi Long, Portland Doula

Heidi Long, Portland Doula

I have dedicated myself to this line of heartfelt work because I believe that an empowering and beautiful birth is possible with the right support. I understand the unpredictable and wonderfully unique nature of each birth and am honored to guide all my clients with deep listening, specialized care, and a calm presence in order to support the newest beginnings, from pregnancy to postpartum, that will have a ripple effect on the rest of their lives.

I received a Bachelor’s degree in Public Health and Holistic Healing from San Francisco State University. I further my studies at Birthingway College of Midwifery and at Natural Resources for all of my Doula Training. Since 2016, I have continued to grow and strengthen my birthwork practice — from offering labor rituals to anchoring the birthing body in a grounded sacred way, to nourishing the Fourth Trimester with warm meals and Herbal Pelvic Steam Treatments. I love teaching Newborn Care skills so that parents can feel more confident and secure. I value giving special attention to partners and/or other family members so that they too can feel empowered to walk gracefully into parenthood and so that the needs of new mothers are further cared for and nurtured.

My passion for Preventative Medicine and Holistic Care stems from my background in college at SFSU as I navigated the medical systems currently in place. I desire to care for each new family through a well-rounded integrated approach, leaving me feeling satisfied in my work of supporting you through the journey from pregnancy into early postpartum.

Growing up in a spiritual practice centered in Japanese culture and living in colorful San Francisco for 6 years taught me cultural competency and a deep compassion and non-judgmental view of other’s belief systems and life-styles. This unique perspective allows me to work with a vast array of families looking for a sensitive doula who can care for their passage into parenthood.

Embodied movement, dancing, and singing are also big parts of my life. I have been a part of several choirs in Portland and and currently singing with Kaleidosound. I appreciate the importance of rest, being out in nature, and making authentic connections with those around me. As a Doula, I have a deep respect for the rites of passage mothers and families go through and honor the transitional nature of each process with steady care and gentle reverence.

Heidi’s Testimonials

Heidi came into our lives when the doula we had hired was pregnant herself and had horrible morning sickness during my labor and delivery. Our doula urgently called Heidi as her backup. The moment she entered the room we felt a strong connection and presence. Heidi helped bring me focus and hope. After having a pleasant labor and birth, we invited Heidi into our home to help us during some of the most difficult postpartum days. We were having little sleep, I had lactation and latching difficulty, and our home was a little bit of a chaos. Heidi used her skills to help me relax and practice natural new lactation techniques, made me nourishing tea, and she had a way to help with whatever I needed. Our moods lifted from the moment she started helping us. I felt rested, I developed a nursing routine that helped my body, and our house looked better. The most wonderful thing was Heidi always had the same strong presence that we have loved since the first time we met her in the birthing room. Since that moment, we knew we could trust her. We loved having her here and we always looked forward to days she came to help. We have decided to work with Heidi again for our second child, and we cannot say enough about her.

We can’t say thank you enough for all of Heidi’s support and encouragement throughout the pregnancy and labor of our baby boy. During the pregnancy Heidi helped Kory and I communicate to work more as a team and prepare for labor. All of her input was incredibly helpful. For the labor/delivery, we couldn’t have done it without her – no exaggeration. She guided Kory, offered advice through each contraction, and talked me through the most difficult contraction, which ultimately led to a natural delivery with no epidural. Heidi was our rock throughout the entire labor and we are forever grateful. She is a phenomenal doula!

Amazing experience. Heidi is one of a kind. She is super passionate and committed to her calling as a doula. As a person, Heidi is caring and truly passionate. She is someone to really get into the details, but she does so in a very natural way. She won my trust from the start. She has a very calm demeanor and a very confident personality. She talks with conviction and she transfers that conviction to the people around her. As a birth doula, Heidi is simply amazing. She knows a lot of techniques and seems to have a storage full of information and past experiences that she uses to help. I trusted that she would know what to do in any situation, and that’s exactly what happened. She knew what to do when I had no idea and she was quick to act. Her actions were always soothing and calming. Heidi is not a clock watcher. She takes time to explain everything during each prenatal visit. She answered all questions with great detail. She would always say, “let’s practice together right now.” She spent time with us, she really got to know us, she devoted time and energy, and that went a long way. Get Heidi as your doula if you really want to feel like your wishes will be honored and your needs met.

Heidi was absolutely amazing and just what we needed for our first birth. Being pregnant for the first time during a pandemic I was already nervous. Then when I found out my mom couldn’t be in the hospital room with me and my husband I knew we would need an extra hand. Not knowing much about Doulas we did some research and decided to connect with Heidi at Doula Fidelity and she was just what we needed. She gave us so much information prior to our birth, helped us with a plan, and made us feel calm and ready for delivery. The day our baby girl was born, she helped me and my husband through one of the hardest and most rewarding experiences of our lives. I honestly don’t know if we could have done it without her. Don’t hesitate to hire Heidi for your birth!

Several big things came from our experience with Heidi. My partner was included in the planning of the birth and shown how to be my primary support with breathwork, massage, nutrition and medical advocacy. Heidi provided all these things too, but I loved that my partner was able to participate in such a meaningful way! She was always there to help me with my insane amount of questions about everything from eating my placenta, to pre-labor, to fibroid care. Bonus: Heidi is also trained in vaginal steaming with herbs to diminish hemorrhoids, scar tissue, postpartum weight gain, bleeding (the list goes on…).  Needless to say, choosing to work with Heidi was an invaluable decision we made, and I highly recommend her if you are in the Portland area! My goodness, Heidi is a huge blessing to the service of women as a doula!
