Couples Connection Class

In-Person Birthing Class In Portland

This 2.5 hour Couples Connection Class is unlike any other class you might take in preparation for birth. You can’t predict or plan for birth, not really. But you can set yourselves up to be present to one another, to focus on what really matters, and to feel deeply connected as a family even before your baby arrives. Couples Connection is about solidifying your couple relationship in preparation for labor and birth. There will be practical hands-on experiences focused on the role of the partner and what they can do specifically to help you cope with your contractions. You will learn how to create your own “Connection Bubble” the term I use to create a special bond between you and your partner so that no matter how your birth unfolds, your baby can be born in to this deep, strong connection that you share already.

Meet Your Instructors:

Liz Farmer is a birth doula, childbirth educator and hypnotherapist. She has attended nearly 300 births and helped clients successfully use hypnosis in many of them. She also used hypnosis to have semi pain free and very positive birth experience. She lives in Portland, OR with her husband, young daughter and two cats. She is co-owner of the Birth First Education Center.

Alison Akan has worked in the birth world in many different roles since 2013. From a midwife’s assistant, full time birth doula to becoming a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator, Alison has supported many families on the journey to meeting their babies in and out of the hospital environment. Alison’s desire to reach more expectant parents who want an out of hospital birth, came the realization that teaching childbirth education was the way forward. Alison enjoys sharing current evidence, simplifying what pregnant people need to know about birth, focusing on the things that are within our control, and preparing preferences for every scenario. Babies are born in a variety of settings and the reward is always exceptional. Alison’s goal teaching this class is to help parents planning an out of hospital birth, feel supported, empowered, and to increase trust in the process so that they can have the most positive birthing experience possible.

A message from the instructor:
What I love about this class is that, regardless of your goals or the location you’ve chosen, this class will give you practical, evidence-based tools and strategies. Will I Learn how to have a Natural Birth?
Evidence Based Birth® believes that every person has their own unique path. Instead of focusing on medicated vs. unmedicated birth, we focus on giving you tools and helping you learn the evidence, so that you can be empowered to make your own decisions! We do have a strong emphasis on non-drug comfort measures, because they have no side effects and can be used by everyone, whether or not you plan to use medications.

By the end of this class my goal is for you to have the tools that you feel are the best fit for your birth experience. If you’re interested in a low-intervention, physiological birth, this class will help you give you relaxation and pain management tools as well as a solid understanding of when and how to use them. If an epidural or Cesarean Birth are part of your birth choice options, we’ll cover how you can be empowered during discussion related to both. Because birth can unfold in unpredictable ways we also discuss advocacy and resiliency in navigating unexpected challenges.

*Price is for two people.
*Masks are optional at this in-person class.
*Space is limited to 8 couples.

Hypnosis For Birth

In-Person Birthing Class In Portland

In this 3-hour class, you will learn how to use hypnosis as a coping tool during birth. Hypnosis has been used in birth for centuries and was popularized in the U.S. by classes such as Hypnobirthing and HypnoBabies.

Hypnosis for Birth teaches you and your birth partner:
1. The power of hypnosis: Explore how hypnosis can be used as a valuable tool during childbirth.
2. Relaxation techniques: Discover various relaxation techniques to induce a state of deep calmness and reduce anxiety.
3. Visualization exercises: Learn how to create vivid mental imagery to promote a positive birthing experience.
4. Self-hypnosis: Develop self-hypnosis skills to tap into your subconscious mind and harness your body’s natural birthing abilities.
5. Pain management: Explore techniques for managing pain through hypnosis, potentially reducing the need for medical interventions.
6. Understanding the mind-body connection: Gain insight into the connection between your mental state and physical sensations during childbirth.
7. Empowerment and confidence: Cultivate a sense of empowerment and confidence in your body’s ability to give birth.
8. Partner involvement: Discover ways in which your birth partner can actively participate and support you through hypnosis techniques.
9. Physiology of childbirth: Learn about the stages of labor, the body’s natural processes, and how hypnosis can complement these physiological changes.
10. How hypnosis can help you through any birth intervention including epidurals, inductions and cesarean births.

This class is not a complete childbirth education class but can be taken on its own. It pairs well with our Hands-On Birth Prep Class for a more comprehensive childbirth education option. This class is not affiliated with Hypnobirthing or Hypnobabies.

This class is taught by Liz Farmer. Liz is a birth doula, childbirth educator and hypnotherapist. She has attended nearly 300 births and helped clients successfully use hypnosis in many of them.
