Keely Scowcroft, Birth Doula

Keely Shea, Portland Doula

I’ve dedicated most of my life to working with children who have developmental disabilities, and it is through this beautiful, challenging, and rewarding experience that I fell in love with supporting families. The word “doula” started showing up in my journal about five years before I finally took the plunge and enrolled in a birth doula training during the height of Covid 19. I’ve had the privilege of volunteering as a birth doula for the past four years and have grown immensely with every single experience.

As someone who has had experience with trauma, I was very eager to learn about the nervous system and the mind-body connection, especially as it pertains to birth. This interest inspired me to take a Trauma Informed Care training for birth workers and also to enroll in the Integrative Somatic Trauma Therapy program through Embody Lab. This deeper knowledge helps me to hold space for the range of emotions, thoughts and feelings that can arise for birthing people and their partners during such a vulnerable and powerful time.

After my birth doula training, I took a Reiki For Birth Workers course and it had a profound effect on my nervous system. I realized that Reiki energy healing could offer similar benefits to pregnant and birthing folks, and I’ve provided Reiki to several clients who’ve experienced a deep sense of calm and relaxation in response. I like to use Reiki to encourage birthing people to stay present in their body and to access their intuition. I believe our bodies possess invaluable, sacred, ancient wisdom that often gets overlooked during childbirth, and I believe one of the greatest gifts I can offer is to reflect back the innate divinity and power that birthing people have within them.

In addition to my training in the emotional and spiritual aspects of childbirth, I have had comprehensive training in the physiological process as well. I spent 6 months taking a deep dive into the biomechanics of birth and fetal positioning through a program called the Body Ready Method. This training equipped me with the tools needed to effectively help clients utilize positions, movements, and mindsets that help prepare the body for birth, assist with labor progression, and aid in birth recovery.

My mission is to provide holistic birth doula care that is person-centered, trauma informed, and evidence based. I aim to create a nurturing space for all kinds of families so they can feel empowered and can listen to their own intuitive wisdom and deeper knowing. I am a grounded person who stays present for whatever arises so that my clients can walk through the birth journey knowing they are not alone.

I’m a Rhode Islander at heart but I’ve called Oregon home for the past seven years. Outside of birthwork, I find immense joy and healing in women’s circles, yoga, acupuncture, hiking, and drinking tea. My partner is an incredible chef so I’m spoiled with delicious homemade meals. We love to camp and explore Oregon and we also enjoy watching cartoons at home together and being silly.

Keely’s Testimonials

Being new parents comes with a lot of responsibility, anxiety and unknowns. Having Keely be at our sides throughout the birth process was everything our little family needed.
Keely was thoughtful, informative, professional and intentional in how she worked with us leading up to our son’s birth, and she was amazing the day of. She was calm, cool and collected as she worked with both mom and dad along with the hospital staff throughout our entire birth experience. It was both an intense yet magical experience made better with Keely’s guidance and support. We would highly recommend working with Keely as your birth doula.

Keely changed the course of our pregnancy towards an experience of trust and confidence. We are eternally grateful to her for being a source of care and wisdom throughout the pregnancy and beyond. Keely has a beautiful quality about her that allows her to care for subtle needs that have big reverberations in the pregnancy journey. For us, she was a doula to the birth of our son but also to the birth of an entirely new phase of life for our entire family. Because she provided so much acknowledgement of our individual transformations and because she made us aware of needs we couldn’t have anticipated (such as deep care for our transformations in marriage as well as specific birthing preferences), we were then able to experience what we now understand as a truly perfect birthing process. Though many things did not go exactly as we had anticipated, it was Keely’s support that allowed us to trust the process and know that we were in good hands with her by our side. We highly recommend Keely for birthing women and families. Know that when you bring Keely into the process you will experience care on deep personal levels and coordinated/practical levels that enrich and strengthen the birthing process.

I found Keely because I was looking for a doula who also knew about energetic work (since I work with energy in my practice as a mom, coach, and healer). Keely is passionate about what she does, and it shows in the way she cares for her clients. Her energy is always positive and uplifting, and she combines her skills in a unique way (body knowledge, emotional support, and Reiki). I especially appreciated what she taught me about the pelvic floor and the specific movements we did to prepare for birth. Her presence, knowledge, and energy have been essential to create my dream birth. I highly recommend her.
