Rauna Otteson, Portland Doula
With a lifelong love of babies and women’s health, I followed my passion into doula work. As a birth and postpartum doula, I care deeply for the birthing person and their experiences as a new parent. My aim is to create a nurturing presence and confidence around the birth or postpartum period and to bring a sense of calm to the transition into parenting. Developing a trusting and nurturing relationship are important components of the care I provide, along with fostering empowerment and encouraging clients to feel strong. My primary goal during time with your family is caring for the birthing person and new baby, however, I routinely do so much more. You will likely find your laundry done, kitchen cleaned, and diapers stocked. Allowing the birthing person the time to heal and bond with your new baby is of the utmost importance. I love seeing a family grow when the baby is born and seeing the parents’ special bond with their new baby. I have over 30 years of experience, starting my career with a BS in Child Development as a Certified Child Life Specialist. With 500 births, 100 postpartum families, many hours of teaching childbirth education classes, and extended care support beyond the postpartum period, I have a vast amount experience that I would like to share with you. I’ve completed many certifications, trainings, and skills that have given me a diverse amount of education and experience. Recently, I added a MS in Health Leadership and also have a background of working with students with special needs on the autism spectrum. I have a wealth information and can answer just about any question about birth, newborns, and their needs. Some of my strengths include birthing positions, newborn care, infant feeds, birth processing, as well as the transition home. I am passionate about nurturing and creating space for new parents and love watching clients become parents, while they learn the skills they need to feel confident. I have also raised two of my own little ones into adulthood. I value building a relationship with new parents during such a personal and vulnerable time.
I moved from Montana to Fresno, CA, to Portland which has now been home for over 25 years. I love the outdoors, traveling, gardening, serving at church, and working on small quilting projects.
